Under president Adama Barrow, Yahya Jammeh’s successor, Gambia has been hard at work trying to revive its oil sector (AEI 791). Some of these efforts have been paying off. In early July, the government confirmed the entry of Australian firm FAR on permits A2 an A5. Barrow, who came into power in January, had however waited until April before appointing an oil minister, Fafa Sanyang.
The incoming minister, who has worked for the oil ministry for many years, was cleared in April of charges of corruption that had been badgering him since 2016. Momodou Badjie, the managing director of Gambia National Petroleum Co (GNPC), who was also caught up in the same affair and cleared at the same time, has returned to his station. The ministry’s commissioner for petroleum, Jerreh Barrow, in office since late 2015, will be adding as many international conferences to his diary as possible to tout the county’s oil assets. Relations between the Gambian authorities and African Petroleum, owned by Romanian businessman Frank Timis (AEI 795), are however, strained. In early July, oil ministry officials told the press that the oil company’s permits A1 and A4 had been revoked. African Petroleum immediately denied the information, stating that they were still holders of the licenses, but its share price took a nosedive.
