Rana Gruber on track to start production at new open-pit mine: Signs contract with long-term partner and entrepreneur HJH for operations at Stensundtjern

Mo i Rana, 29 November 2024 - Rana Gruber ASA, Norway’s only producer of iron ore, has signed a new contract with the local contractor and long-term partner HJH for operational responsibilities at the upcoming Stensundtjern open-pit mine, rich on magnetite resources. Production is anticipated to begin in the second half of 2025.

HJH, which oversees the current operations at the Ørtfjell open-pit mine, will seamlessly transition to Stensundtjern upon Ørtfjell’s conclusion. This continuity maximizes equipment transfer efficiency and supports uninterrupted production.

Rana Gruber currently controls four iron ore deposits located in Storforshei and Ørtfjell in the Dunderland Valley, just north-east of Mo i Rana.

Increasing magnetite production
HJH’s responsibilities at Stensundtjern will encompass blasting, waste rock removal, transport and daily mining activities, ensuring highly efficient production from day one.

The new Stensundtjern open-pit is expected to boost Rana Gruber’s magnetite production to new highs, due to the magnetite-rich ore body at the site. Magnetite is a highly specialized product sold to the chemical industry for use in water treatment systems, priced at a premium due to its ultra high-grade properties with an iron content above 71%. Rana Gruber has a current run-rate of Magnetite production at 160,000 mt annually, expecting to increase to 175,000 mt in 2025 and 200,000 mt in 2026.

The new contract reaffirms that Rana Gruber is on track to meet its projected timeline for Stensundtjern, as presented during the recent capital markets day. With production anticipated to commence in 2025, this milestone further confirms Rana Gruber’s dedication to delivering a stable and high-quality supply of iron ore to European markets. The contract aligns with the company’s previously communicated capital expenditure plans, requiring no additional investments beyond what was disclosed. Furthermore, the target cash cost of 50-55 USD per ton remains firm, highlighting Rana Gruber’s commitment to operational efficiency and cost discipline.

Unrealized effects will be recognized in other financial gains/(losses) in the P&L. Positions that are not relevant for the quarter will be adjusted in the adjusted net profit, similar to positions related to iron ore and FX going forward.

Rana Gruber ASA – Production update Q4-24

Rana Gruber has today published the production update for the fourth quarter of 2024.

The production of iron ore concentrates for the fourth quarter reached 478.000 metric tons, surpassing the previous year’s production of 452.000 metric tons. Also, the production of magnetite continued its strong trend, ending at 54.000 metric tons, up from 17.000 metric tons last year. This achievement marks an all-time high production of 1.848.000 metric tons concentrate, exceeding last year’s record of 1.817.000 metric tons.

Volume sold in the fourth quarter of hematite was 492.000 metric tons. This corresponds to eight shipments of approx. 60.000 metric tons. Final settlement of these eight shipments will be January (4), February (1) and March (3). One of the shipments scheduled for settlement in January was delivered to Asia and will be subject to higher freight costs compared to the remaining shipments.

In total for 2024, Rana Gruber achieved a record high number of shipments, with a total of 71 shipments delivering hematite and magnetite to our global customers.

Financial Performance:
Net profit for the fourth quarter was NOK 57 million (adj. net profit of NOK 95 million). Total revenues for the fourth quarter amounted to NOK 443.2million (NOK 620.2 million). Despite strong sales volumes fourth quarter revenues this year is reduced compared to last mainly because of lower prices and negatively lagged effects from the previous quarter. Reduced freight cost, together with the depreciation in the Norwegian Currency continues to contribute positively for Rana Gruber.

The last three months of 2024 saw a continuation of the strong production levels we have experienced over the past year, with total output reaching 478,000 metric tons. We have consistently elevated our quality standards to new heights. We are on track to install the remaining equipment necessary to produce above Fe65 with sustainable tonnage. This final installation is scheduled for the beginning of the second quarter, and we expect to sell our first cargo linked to the Fe65 index in the second half of 2025.

At the beginning of January Rana Gruber reached an agreement on the framework for future operations in the Storforshei and Ørtfjell areas with Salten Reindeer District. This agreement secures the coexistence for both of us and is essential to achieving mutual understanding and sustainable solutions.

“Cost focus has been an important focus at the end of 2024 and Rana Gruber strives to deliver in the range between USD 50-55 over time. I am therefore happy to see that our effort already pays off and that we managed to reduce our cash cost to 46 USD per ton, well below our target. This gives us the confidence to focus on our long-term ambitions and at the same time deliver return to our stakeholders”, says Gunnar Moe, CEO.

For the sixteen quarter in a row Rana Gruber distribute dividends to our shareholders and the board of directors has decided to distribute NOK 66.7 million/ DPS of NOK 1.80. After two quarters with a payout ratio of 60 percent, we are now back at 70 percent. This shows our commitment to deliver return to our shareholders and ability to create profitability over time.

Siste installasjonene før overgangen til en stabil produksjon med stabile utbytter på Fe65 gjøres i andre kvartal. Videre forventer vi å selge vår første last knyttet til Fe65-indeksen i løpet av andre halvdel av 2025.

I begynnelsen av januar inngikk Rana Gruber en avtale med Salten Reinbeitedistrikt om rammene for fremtidige operasjoner i Storforshei- og Ørtfjell-områdene. Denne avtalen sikrer sameksistens mellom partene og er avgjørende for å oppnå gjensidig forståelse og bærekraftige løsninger.

Økonomiske resultater:

Omsetning på NOK 1 664 millioner (NOK 1 932 millioner).

EBITDA på NOK 532,7 millioner (NOK 930 millioner).

Justert nettoresultat på NOK 387 millioner (NOK 644 millioner).

Attraktivt utbytte: NOK 9,24 per aksje utbetalt i 2024, tilsvarende en utbytteavkastning på 12 % basert på aksjekursen ved årets begynnelse.

Strategiske fremskritt:

Økt jernmalmkvalitet, med et tydelig mål om å nå 65 % jerninnhold innen første halvår av 2025.

Økt magnetittproduksjon med 50,9 % til 156 000 tonn.

Hovedpunkter fra Bærekraftsrapporten 2024:

Redusert karbonavtrykk: Karbonavtrykk per tonn jernmalmkonsentrat redusert til 6,14 kg, ned fra 7,17 kg i 2023, noe som ytterligere forsterker Rana Grubers ledende bærekraftsprofil i bransjen.

Sirkulær økonomi og avfallsreduksjon: Selskapet oppnådde en sorteringsgrad på 92,2 %, tett på målet på 92,5 %.

Helse og sikkerhet: Fortsatt fokus på arbeidsplasssikkerhet, uten alvorlige skader rapportert i 2024.

Mangfold og inkludering: Andelen kvinnelige ansatte økte til 17,6 %, med en fortsatt ambisjon til å forbedre kjønnsbalansen i arbeidsstyrken.
