To me it sounds like a honest post from Jo. I think he understands very well that the company needs a more international profile now. International breakthrough is in his interest too
For prisen bør definitivt ligge langt over 20 tallet nå.
Trondheim, Norway / Kentucky, USA—04 Aug 2023— CrayoNano AS is pleased to announce the signing of a commercial frame contract between CrayoNano and AquiSense Technologies, for sales of UV-C LED components valued at about 4 million NOK over the next 12 months. The frame contract offers additional opportunities to increase the value beyond the minimum amount.
Nikkiso is really not a large player in UV-C LED, and they bought Aquisense for a “small” price.
If CrayoNano is to be bought, my guess is German company Infineon Technologies AG which early last year stated they had a large budget for several acquisitions. March last year they announced the acquisition of GaN Systems for US$830M, a Canadian company specializing in hyper-materials to replace silicon as semiconductor material for different devices. Its a strategic long term tech investment they stated. CrayoNano actually grows nanowires consisting of GaN (gallium nitride) and they have stated that the CrayoNano-platform can be used “for a lot of other uses than UV-C LED”.
If to be bought by a South Korean company my guess is the world leading LED producer with world largest patent portfolio for LEDs: Seoul Viosys (Seoul Semiconductor). They are suing globally on an ongoing basis and protecting their very long accumulation of patents.
If to be bought by Japanese company, my guess is Nichia, one of the top 3 in the world.
Crayonanos tech would give a super possible uncrushable upper-hand if any of the top 3-5 companies acquired them, and it would be of CrayoNano best strategy to sell to the actors with the best existing patents for “current state of the art tech” which would possible be of more value the them?
As you see it, would it be advantageous for Infineon to place administration / development in Taiwan if they were to be the ones acquiring the company?
This is a great question, because GaN Systems Inc is a fabless company and Infineon highlights this is especially great fit for the future with being able to cooperate with several foundries:
A key difference between Infineon and GaN Systems is that the former has chip production lines, while the latter is fabless.
The market is booming due to the surging demand for top-notch, energy-efficient electronic devices across various industries. However, it’s vital to recognize that market dynamics are ever-shifting, and CNANO’s latest developments might just shake things up for Infineon in the tech race.
Could the pursuit of acquiring CNANO be driven mainly by a fear-based motivation? Obviously kind of, but what is your take?
Most acquisitions are “fear-based”, from Instagram (Facebook) to semiconductor M&A, its about leapfrogging, best case integrating and value creation, “worst case”; remove them from possible other competitors as a target.
Infineon focuses on power semiconductors today, but they state solar cells as future investment areas. CreayoNano has started filing patents for both solar cells and laser diodes, based on the nanowires and graphene. CrayoNano has several times stated the tech platform with their hypermaterial for other uses “beyond UV-C LED”.
GaN Systems is fabless and it is a almost pure patent and R&D investment.
Either way, high probability of CrayoNano will be bought within few years, if not this year.
The strange thing is that if CNANO is preparing for a soon to be stock listing, they have more or less turned on hiring freeze the last 6 months despite going into “sales/commercialization” - the company soon only has employees with deep tech education/background, the others are leaving each month. In my opinion that does not fit with a stock listing with the company being in accelerated “sales/commercialization” mode. Its a better fit being acquired by a company already being in the business providing their own sales force.
…and you`re probably right. This seems to be the only explanation.
