Stockholm Exergi to sell carbon removal credits to Microsoft
Stockholm Exergi just announced that the company has signed a contract with Microsoft for the sale of 3.33 million tonnes of carbon removal credits. The delivery of these credits is planned to start in 2028, and continue for a period of ten years. In other words, with this agreement, the company is selling 333kt per year of its planned 800kt per year carbon removal capacity.
As a reminder, Stockholm Exergi will be a BECCS-facility (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture & Storage), which means that the CO2 is not only captured – it is effectively removed from the atmosphere, as the CO2 in the biological material would eventually have entered the atmosphere even if it had not been burnt in a power plant. This effectively entails negative emissions. What Microsoft is buying is the right of use these negative emissions to offset their own emissions, in an effort to reach internal climate ambitions. This is similar to the deal Microsoft made with Ørsted for the Kalundborg CCS project, wherein ACC is the carbon capture technology provider.
Stockholm Exergi has previously commented that this is a key puzzle piece that needs to fall into place before FID can be taken. A few more pieces are still remain though – the company still intends to seek state aid from the Swedish Government, and make additional private carbon removal deals, both of which are necessary to reach FID. In the press release, it is stated that FID is expected in Q4 2024 (the company has previously said ‘within 2024’).
Nonetheless, we view this as a another significant de-risking of the Stockholm Exergi project. CAPSL has already signed a technology licensing agreement with Stockholm Exergi, and we expect the company to receive a NOK ~20m license payment once FID is taken. More importantly though, this will make CAPSL’s technology more proven in the eyes of the carbon capture market, and probably accelerate future contract awards.
