The Global Militarization Index (GMI), developed by the Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies (BICC), assesses the relative weight and importance of a country’s military apparatus in relation to its society. The GMI evaluates factors such as military expenditures relative to GDP and health spending, the ratio of military personnel to the population and physicians, and the availability of heavy weapons relative to the population.
As of the latest available data, the top ten most militarized countries are:
- Ukraine
- Israel
- Armenia
- Qatar
- Bahrain
- Saudi Arabia
- Greece
- Singapore
- Azerbaijan
- Russia
These rankings indicate that these countries allocate a significant portion of their resources to the military sector compared to other areas of society.
It’s important to note that the GMI reflects data up to 2022, and more recent developments may not be fully captured. For the most current information and detailed analyses, you can refer to BICC’s official publications and interactive maps.
